Weight loss post

November 3, 2013

I feel like this post is LONG overdue.

Firstly: To those of you who actually still follow/care about my blog - thank you! I haven't blogged properly in close to a year and a half, while I was losing weight I stopped buying new clothes often (apart from gym clothes) and focused all of my energy into reaching my goals. I don't blog anymore not only because my style has changed since losing weight, but also because its not cheap being a fashion blogger and despite what anyone says, there IS pressure to have all of the latest trends. Taking a break from blogging has made me become a lot more careful with my money.

Anyways, I wanted to make this post to talk about my weight loss because a lot of people have contacted me asking to share my story. I always maintained that I was happy with myself before losing weight. This was a journey to becoming healthy, losing weight obviously had to be a part of that. I love life and the thought of dying young or having a weight related illness for the rest of my life really scared me.

I am not a health professional and what works for me may not work for everyone, so please remember that.

Exercise:
I never joined a gym, I didn't spend one cent on a gym membership. I was unfit when I started this journey. I had dabbled in fitness in the past but had gone back to my lazy ways and I was at a point when walking up the stairs would leave me out of breath. I was too embarrassed to join a gym and knew I had to start off slow. Every morning I went walking, I started off with 20 minute walks then increased by a couple of minutes every day. I walked at a pace that I felt was giving me a workout and increased when I began to feel fitter. I did this for a few weeks then added in Jillian Michaels "30 Day Shred" dvd after my walks. Yes, the DVD is hard.. you will want to die some days and probably have aches for the first couple of days, but quitters never win.
After doing that for over a month I decided to move on to Insanity. Insanity is a hardcore workout and if you still struggle with the 30 Day Shred then I would advise you not to attempt it. I think I was around 200lbs when I began, so it is possible for fat people to do it, but its intense. I couldn't do all of the moves at first and I had to take extra breaks (honestly, I was probably taking a break every 3 minutes or so at the start) but just try your best. On the moves that I couldn't do I didn't just sit there and do nothing - I did something else to keep my body moving, usually from the 30DS or I would modify the Insanity exercise to make them easier. I took one rest day per week as recommended, always take a rest day! Its important for your body to recover after intense workouts. The exercises will get easier over time but the workouts will not because you push yourself every day.

Diet:
I started out doing the Slimming World program but soon realized that counting calories was the best way forward. The amount of calories you need depends on a number of things (weight, height, how much you exercise, etc) I would recommend signing up with myfitnesspal which is free, and they will give you a guide. I logged everything I ate and it really opened my eyes and made me see how easy it is to gain weight. All of those cheese sandwiches I was snacking on really add up!
I didn't give up one thing that I used to eat while I was losing weight. I still ate bread almost every day, I still had takeout, etc. but I made better choices. Instead of eating white bread I would have wholegrain seeded bread which was higher in protein, instead of ordering a fried/heavy calorie meal when eating out I would go for something baked or that I knew would be healthier. You don't have to stop enjoying food, just make better choices & educate yourself on what you are eating. Portion control is important too :)
One meal won't make you gain weight but letting one bad meal turn into a day (or week) of bad eating will have a negative effect on your weight loss. Another thing I like to do is make a healthy version of whatever not-so-healthy food I want. Potato fries are my weakness so sometimes when I am craving those I make over baked carrot fries instead, delicious!

Losing weight changed me a lot. Not just on the outside. At my lowest weight earlier this year I thought I gained all of this new confidence and everything was wonderful... but I was in a bad relationship and after it ended I realized that a girl who was truly happy and confident and loved herself would not have stuck around as long as I did. Its hard not to lose yourself. Weight loss will change a lot of things. People will treat you differently and you will notice things about yourself that never bothered you before. Until I lost weight I never noticed how intense my "hip dips" were.
However there is good news - the positive aspects far outweigh the negative! I am healthy, I can run, I workout every day, my skin is much better, and even silly little things like being able to reach for a dress in a store and know that if it doesn't fit then thats okay because I can get a bigger size, or two sizes bigger, if needed. Results won't happen overnight, it takes a lot of time and dedication but the end result is worth it.

If anyone has any questions feel free to leave them in a comment, I can make a new post in the near future with answers!

blog sale!

December 4, 2012

Hey everyone! I know I haven't been around for a while because I have been focusing on my weight loss and not buying too many new clothes, but I am getting really close to my goal weight now and clearing out my old things to make room for some new clothes to fit my current size (and I need to pay bills!)

So I have made a flickr with all of the items i'm selling. Most have only been worn two or three times and many still have tags attached. If anyone is interested in looking you can see them by clicking here

I will be going to the post office in the morning so if you would like to purchase something drop me an email pearlslaceandruffles [at] gmail [dot] com

On a side note, i'm considering changing my blog name once I return to blogging. I'm not 100% sure yet, but I feel like a fresh start would be good and my style has changed somewhat since I lost weight. I'm willing to take more risks nowadays! Any thoughts on that would be appreciated!

OOTD: Still here

August 27, 2012

Hello my lovelies! I can't believe it has been over two months since I last blogged here. I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has stuck around and continued to follow my blog while I have been inactive. I miss blogging more than words can say (I think about it at least ten times a day!) but I haven't been buying new clothes as it would be a waste of money while i'm losing a lot of weight, so I don't have anything to post on here!

Blouse: Primark *** Skirt: ASOS *** Bracelet: Primark

The outfit above was from before I started losing weight, I just never got around to posting it. I love this ASOS skirt because even though its a "skater" style skirt, it is made from really heavy material and I don't need to worry about the wind blowing it up! Paired with a Primark mint lace blouse which I paid €13 for and it was marked down to €3 two weeks later...that always happens to me! I must be drawn to the most unpopular items.

If anyone is interested in seeing a little snapshot of my weight loss so far (I am over halfways there now!) - I uploaded before/after type picture on Instagram this morning, my username on there is pearlslaceandruffles should you want to have a little peek!
I will be buying a few new things soon (I am going away for two weeks in September so desperately need clothes that fit!) and hopefully I will have some blog-worthy outfits to share with everyone.

OOTD: Lacie

Dress (worn as top): Dunnes *** Skirt/Belt: New Look *** Kimono Cardigan: New Look *** Bracelets: Primark

Before I started losing weight I took pictures of a couple of OOTD's that I never posted, because I wanted to have something to post during the time when I am losing weight and my clothes aren't fitting how they should! So this entry (and the next couple of OOTD's) will actually be outfits I planned in advance but am wearing on the day I post them. I hope that doesn't sound too confusing, because I am rather awful at trying to explain things!

It feels kind of crazy to be wearing chunky knit cardigans in mid June, but the weather here is so unpredictable most of the time and layering is definitely the way to go! The "top" in this outfit is actually a bodycon lace dress but I think it works great under skirts too. The material isn't too thick so it doesn't really feel like i'm wearing a dress underneath! Unfortunately the belt that came with the skirt was far too small for me, as you can see in the pictures! I couldn't find my favorite brown belt at the time so just used this one for the pictures (thankfully I have since found it and am wearing it with the outfit today!) I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but whenever I buy a skirt that comes with a belt, the belt never fits! The skirt will fit perfect but the belt needs some extra inches.

A little bit of shameless self promotion but I have quite a few listings ending on eBay in a couple of hours, mostly new or gently used items. There's a lot of things that I have worn on my blog before so if anyone is interested you can view my listings by clicking here. Quite a few end in about four hours but some end tomorrow too!

2 years of blogging

May 28, 2012

Untitled-2

This blog, my little space on the internet, is two years old today! I still can't get my head around that. It doesn't seem like that long ago when I was trying to think up a blog name and take my first OOTD pictures. You'll have to excuse my less than impressive drawing above, I have no artistic skills whatsoever but I tried!
I just want to say a MASSIVE thank you to every single one of you who continue to read, comment and follow my blog. It really means the world to me. I never would have thought my blog would reach so many people, and I appreciate it so very much.

Heres to many more years of blogging :)
