Crystal Renn by Terry Richardson

September 29, 2010

I don't know if I have mentioned it before but i'm not the biggest Crystal Renn fan (my favorite plus size model is newcomer Tara Lynn) and this photoshoot doesn't help that. I know a lot of other bloggers and plus size girls admire her but I just..don't. I love models of every shape and size, but we don't have to like models just because they're plus sized. Sidenote: Is Crystal even considered a plus sized model anymore? She walked the Zac Posen Spring 2011 Show on September 11th and looked tiny to me!

This shoot grabbed my attention but not in a good way. My first thoughts were "w.t.f" which was then followed by a couple of minutes of staring at my screen with my mouth open. I don't think this is her best work and i'm really disappointed that she agreed to work with Terry Richardson, the most overrated photographer in recent years - who also happens to be a sexist pervert. I think any woman with self respect would (and should!) stay away from him. Terry sticks to his usual theme of a model posing provocatively against a white wall, very exciting.

Model: Crystal Renn | Photographer: Terry Richardson | Stylist: Carine Roitfeld | Vogue Paris, October 2010

Yeah, the idea of squid sliding down someones throat is incredibly sexy, way to go Terry. I don't know what the exact message behind this is. A plus sized woman loves her food, women are pieces of meat (in Terry's eyes), Crystal trying to prove she doesn't have an eating disorder..who knows. She is styled beautifully which is the only positive thing I have to say!

What do you girls think?

I feel like my face looks very "chalky" in these pictures! I love fall and winter but the lighting in my room is not too good for these next few months once its after 3pm! I also switched to using .jpeg format instead of .png for my pictures which means faster loading times but lower picture quality and that is really bugging me! Do you guys prefer to see high quality pictures or faster loading pictures? Anyways, moving along..

I got the job!

Rewinding back to Friday: After 20 minutes of trying to twist it with my tweezers I still couldn't get my lip piercing jewelery out (which made me double stressed!) When I got to the city I popped into my favorite piercing studio and they were really helpful and had the studs out in a few seconds! I ran back to my cab and the driver couldn't find the hotel, he went down a lot of side streets/alleys to "avoid" traffic but we ended up on the other side of the city. I got there eventually and just on time!

I went inside to register, pick up my name tag and then I made my way to the waiting area. There were already 2 groups of girls on each side of the room talking amongst themselves and I just felt so awkward so I took a seat alone in the middle! Aha. After about 30 seconds I spoke to another girl who came in alone and every time someone new came in they joined our group, it was really nice getting to know them and it made the whole group interview easier.

The whole interview process was certainly..different! It was a group interview and there were between 20 and 25 other girls. When we entered the main interview room I snagged a seat in the front row and the lady announced it was going to be similar to an X-factor audition (minus the singing, thank god!)
I was picked as the first girl to tell the group about myself in 10 seconds, I just said my name, age and that I have a plus size fashion blog. I didn't stand up so when about 70% of the other girls did I felt like I had possibly let myself down very early! After we all introduced ourselves we had to answer questions about customer service, why we want to work for Forever 21, etc. I made sure to let them know that I know about the brand in my answers (how they expanded from 40 to 500 stores between 1997 and 2010, they print John 3:16 on the bags, etc) At the end of that "round" they cut the group down to 7 girls including me.

Then we moved on to round 2 which was styling outfits. We were put in pairs, I got paired with a girl I had made friends with which was great! We were given an occasion to put an outfit together for. Ours was "a girl on her first date" and we decided that she was going for drinks so the outfit had to be fancy. I think ours was pretty hard because there was only 2 dresses on the rail and one of them would have been unflattering on anyone over a size 8! In the end we went with a black lace dress, long silver necklace, black peeptoe platform heels, leopard clutch, red blazer and described why we picked everything. After that round the women interviewing us went to the back of the room to discuss it. I was so nervous yet excited, I didn't think I would get to the third round because one of the women had questioned why we didn't use scarves or tights like she suggested (I replied that the scarf would have distracted from the necklace and the shoes have open toes so tights wouldn't have worked too well) After 2 minutes they came back and 3 of us were picked to go to round 3!

Round 3 was just a 1:1 interview with one of the managers of the new store, she was so friendly (and pretty!), she really made the whole interview fun which helped my nerves! I had to answer about 6 questions relating to the job (what would I do in certain situations, obstacles I overcame, etc) then she said I was hired and told me a little about the store. I made sure to shake hands/thank the women who did the other rounds on the way out, I am so incredibly happy that I got the job! Now lets just hope they let me work in the Faith 21 section. My orientation day is at the end of next month, I can't wait to get started. If anyone is interested, the store is 70,000 sq ft and it will have every F21 line (faith, kids, mens, etc) and it opens in mid November.

OOTD: Something different!

September 22, 2010

Today I decided to do something a little different with my outfit....wear shorts! If you have been following my blog for a while you have probably noticed that I only wear skirts and dresses. Why? Well, I like how pants look on people but I don't think they're very comfortable. Plus because of my body shape I have issues finding pants that fit, i'm a size 16-18 but the legs are always far too baggy on me! These shorts were indeed baggy on my legs but a perfect fit on my waist.

Denim shorts: Dorothy Perkins *** Floral print oversized top: Topshop *** White vest: Faith 21 *** Necklace: Forever 21 *** Bracelet: Primark *** Plimsolls: Topshop

The shorts had been sitting in my closet (with tags still on!) for quite a while so I figured I should at least give them a chance. I probably won't be wearing them or any kind of pants again any time soon! It felt incredibly awkward. The Topshop floral top was also an item that I purchased and never wore so I wanted to wear it at least once before winter kicks in.

Speaking of winter, I really need to do some A/W shopping! I have far too many pretty sun dresses and not enough wooly warm clothes! Irish winters in recent years haven't been too nice (incredibly cold and icy!) so I want to stock up on some knit tights too. Have you girls started shopping for winter clothes yet?

OOTD: nude pink body & pink sequin dress

September 20, 2010

I didn't get a chance to update over the weekend so i'm going to do a little two-in-one post, an outfit from Saturday night and an outfit from today. I wore my favorite nude pink pumps with both outfits, those shoes have been my best purchase of the last year without question. And at only €15 they were a steal! I noticed last week that the store have them back in stock so they must be a hit with everyone. I didn't accessorize too much with either dress, I wanted the focus to be on the dresses so I kept the jewelery simple.

Saturday:

Dress: Primark *** Cardigan: Faith 21 *** Shoes: Dunnes *** Bracelet: Forever 21 *** Necklace: Forever 21

Today:

Dress: New Look *** Blazer: Dunnes *** Shoes: Dunnes *** Bracelets: Dorothy Perkins

Remember when you were a little girl and always wanted to be *that* girl in your favorite movie? Well, aside from the Olsen twins, I always wanted to be Daryl Hannah's character (Madison) in the movie "Splash". As soon as I seen this dress I knew I had to have it. I feel like 50% mermaid, 30% Barbie, 17% princess and 3% crazy when I wear it. It is the most expensive piece of clothing I own from New Look, it was somewhere between €75 and €80 (because its from the Giles Deacon collection) but it was worth every cent. None of the sequins/discs have fallen off yet which i'm very happy about too!

A big "yay" is in order! Why? Well, a while back I mentioned that Forever 21 are planning to open their first European store here in the fall, then a couple of weeks later I mentioned that I had applied for a position.. last week I got a reply and I have an interview! My interview is on Friday, I have no idea what to expect but i'm still very excited. I don't have any fashion retail experience but hopefully that won't matter too much. Forever 21 is hands down my favorite store.

The latest Beth Ditto for Evans collection launched a couple of days ago online, I was going to make a post dedicated to it but after viewing the full collection I decided against it. Don't get me wrong, its great that us big girls have a trendy collection like this to look forward to but it didn't blow me away. I only liked one piece (the polka dot dress) but I believe it was almost £60 and I would have preferred if the collar was a solid color like this. Lots of other bloggers seem happy with the collection but as much as I wanted to love it, I don't. Maybe my expectations are just higher now that we have ASOS curve and Faith 21, both of whom produce trendy plus size clothes at a much lower price. What do you girls think about it? Beth Ditto for Evans AW10

PS. Today I reached 600 followers! My blog is only about 3 1/2 months old so its still very much a baby compared to most other blogs out there but I just wanted to say that I am really thankful for all of my readers and I love you all! ♥

OOTD/VMA Fashion Recap

Dress: Primark *** Shoes: Love Label *** Bracelet: Forever 21

This is actually yesterdays outfit! Excuse how weird my face looks, I had fake tan on and it makes me look odd. I always say I won't use it again but I get bored of my milky white skin now and then.
I have my arms out! A few people have asked me to post an outfit where i'm not covering my arms so here you go! I do tend to cover my arms on purpose not because of my bingo wings (i'm fine with them!) but because I have a skin condition called keratosis pilaris on my upper arms. Its not too noticable in these pictures probably because a. i'm wearing fake tan and b. the flash on my camera was very bright. It does bother me quite a bit though!

I bought this dress in Primark a couple of days ago, I was super excited to find it still there in my size because the bigger sizes always sell out first! I loved it in the store but on me..i'm not so sure. I don't think the fabric is the most flattering but I love the single shoulder, rose corsage and ruching detail on the side! It was only €15 so it was a bargain but I may list it on eBay eventually.
I kept it simple with the accessories, I wanted the focus to be on the detailing on the dress and the shoes I paired it with. I just added a lace bangle from Forever 21 and a sequin clutch purse (not pictured)

The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards were on Sunday so I am a couple of days late but I thought it would be fun to do a little fashion recap and show you guys who I thought looked great...and the not so great too!

My favorites of the night: (l-r) Ashley Greene wearing Giambattista Valli, I would wear this whole outfit! I love the contrast between the bustier and skirt. Jenni "Jwoww" Farley often looks trashy on Jersey Shore but she looked so classy at this event and really surprised me. The diamante shoes really compliment the detail on the shoulder of her dress. Katy Perry wore Marchesa, I couldn't decide if this was more of a hit or a maybe but it made it to my favorites in the end. The dress reminded me a little of a figure skating costume at first but it has grown on me. I probably would have chosen a closed toe pump (think YSL Tribute pumps in patent black or nude!) but overall I liked it. And how cute is her hair! Stephanie Pratt and Lauren "Lo" Bosworth stood out with their golden tones, they were wearing Nicole Miller and Gabriela Cadena. Stephanie took a risk with the maxi dress but pulled it off and Lo's one shoulder gold dress was a nice change from all of the black and white the other celebs were wearing!

Now on to the "maybe" list!

Emma Stone looked cute in her Pucci leather dress but I feel like she played it a bit too safe. She could have used more accessories or different shoes to make the dress really stand out. Audrina Partridge stuck with the sparkles trend in her Isaac Mizrahi dress but the open toe gold sandals ruined the outfit for me. Victoria Justice looked really cute but her dress reminds me of the kind of dresses I used to buy at Hot Topic when I was 15. Sammi "Sweetheart" Giancola was dressed head-to-toe in Bebe, her dress was only $139. It is a nice dress and it looks good on her but it just didn't say "wow" to me. Lastly.. Brenda Song opted for leather look leggings and a tunic top, she was one of the few female celebrities who didn't wear a dress (Jane Lynch being the other, but she worked it!) I do actually like the tunic and leggings together however I think the shoes ruin it, they are too bulky. I think she should have opted for a pump or booties that aren't quite so chunky. Another reason she only made it to my "maybe" list instead of my favorites was because I don't think this outfit is appropriate for the event she was attending.

The not so good..

Deena Nicole Cortese wore a blue and black tiered dress. I think the shape of the dress wasn't particularly flattering on her and it looks a little tacky to me! Selena Gomez was dressed in a metallic Reem Acra gown, I like the dress itself but it seems like she is trying to adapt a more mature, grown up style. I don't think this dress works for her. Ke$ha is in a garbage bag from Home Depot. I am not being sarcastic, she actually made the dress with a black garbage bag. I do give her A+ for effort, her (or whoever made the dress) did a good job on creating a dress from something we usually use to dispose of trash but overall the dress isn't cute (I do love her legs though!) Evan Rachel Wood got it all wrong! Yikes. The dress looks too big for her in places, especially on her right waist-hip area. I know leopard print is in for A/W but I don't like this look at all. I think a black figure hugging dress and berry pumps would have looked much cuter with her red hair and porcelain skin.

Roxy Olin brought something different to the red carpet and had a unique look but I just don't like it personally. Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi's printed blue dress would have been cute if it was a solid color. I'm not a big fan of the print (I do like her accessories though) Hayley Williams wore Miu Miu from their Fall 2010 collection. I preferred this on the runway where they styled it as a tunic rather than a dress, plus Hayleys hair ruins it for me. Amber Riley was one of the few bigger gals on the red (well, white) carpet and I hate to say it but this look did nothing for me. I am usually a fan of her style and I think she is adorable but the length of her dress looks awkward and I am over that "nerdy" look with those oversized glasses that hipsters have been doing for the past few years. Gabi of youngfatandfabulous was the other plus sized girl on the carpet that night and she looked incredible! You can see a picture of her outfit on her blog.

(VMA pictures are from mtv.com)

You may be wondering why Lady Gaga and her Alexander Wang gown or tacky meat dress didn't make it onto any list? Well I don't think she is "exciting" or "different" or "unique". People have been doing what she is doing for years but they are just lesser known and not quite as obnoxious (see Roisin Murphy) Personally I think she tries too hard to be different and is still figuring out her own style.

Who were your favorites of the night? Are you a fan of all the one shoulder dresses, the sparkles, and the black and white? Do you miss long length gowns or are you happy that the mini dress is dominating the red carpets right now?

xoxo
